Amar’e Stoudemire & Knicks Officially Agree Upon Buyout, Joins Mavs

UPDATE: Amare has officially agreed to join the Dallas Mavericks.

Amar’e Stoudemire’s tenure with the New York Knicks has finally come to an end. The 32-year-old veteran had entered the final year of his $100 million contract with the Knickerbockers and felt his time under the Phil Jackson and Derek Fisher regime should come to an unfortunate end. With reduced minutes in a bench role this season, he’s still managed to average nearly 12 points a game and 5 boards.

One team in the Western Conference that would love for him to join them immediately, is the Dallas Mavericks. Since trading away their back-up big man Brandon Wright, the team has suffered severe depth at the front-court – with Tyson Chandler having to overexert his talents some nights. The Los Angeles Clippers have shown interest also, as their team is currently enduring multiple injuries with Blake Griffin and Glen Davis both out.

The league’s best franchise, San Antonio Spurs has also emerged as a late dark horse with interest for the veteran. If anyone could resurrect Stoudemire’s underwhelming career, it’s Gregg Popovich and his staff on the River Walk. This wasn’t a tough decision for him either, as Amar’e was originally the only player willing to sign with the Knicks in 2010 – leading to more players becoming once again attracted to the city.

While dealing with multiple knee surgeries over the last few seasons, Amar’e has been regaining strength through his body (in an obvious contract year) and still feels he can contribute to a contender. Stoudemire ultimately couldn’t remain healthy and didn’t want to leave the Knicks – who have a guaranteed top 5 pick for the upcoming summer draft and the most money to spend in on talent in free agency.
