Did The Bengals Make Right Choice Giving Andy Dalton a $96 Million Extension?

Andy Dalton Signs 6-Year Extension With The Cincinnati Bengals Through 2020, Reportedly Worth $96M.

The Cincinnati Bengals have finally confirmed starting quarterback Andy Dalton as their franchise player, giving the 26-year-old a hefty contract. While initial reports revealed Dalton was signed to a $115 million deal over 6-years, NBC Sports has broken down the contract to reveal the base value is indeed to be $96 million.

He has the opportunity of receiving a $17 million bonus signing within the next three days, along with extra escalators pending his post-season performance to add value towards $115 million. Through his first three seasons as QB out of TCU, Dalton has displayed his best Peyton Manning impersonation, having highly impressive play during the regular season; but going win-less in each year of the post-season.

Andy needs all the confidence he can get heading into next January, as we expect the Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens to continue the unpredictability of the AFC North for another year. While Cincinnati has stood behind their QB, this move could potentially backfire on them, putting more pressure on Dalton when they finally make it past Wild Card Weekend (see: Tony Romo).

Now as a legit Super Bowl contender for an open AFC, Dalton has one of the league’s best defenses and also a deep receiving/rushing core of players, which should be nearly impossible for the Bengals not to win one post-season game. That is until we see Marvin Lewis (who we love) across the sidelines, given his track record in the playoffs.

Let us know in the comments if you would give Andy Dalton that steep contract.
