The first game of Tuesday featured two of the better few sides in the last 16, but Argentina only managed to scrape a last-minute victory against Switzerland. With many star players such as Messi getting closed down quickly, Argentina struggled to go forward, with surrounding players also having a hard time showcasing their talent.
Arguably the most exciting chance of the first half came from Switzerland, after two powerful shots arrived in quick succession, despite Romero being able to make fairly comfortable saves.
Half-time was a dull 0-0.
Having struggled earlier in the game, Messi had the chance to take several shots at goal, but Benaglio rose the occasion with quick reactions to stop the Barca player.
The game eventually went to extra time, and while looking like heading to penalties, Di Maria made a darting run down the side in order to receive a pass from Messi and direct the ball into the net first time.
It was 1-0 in the 117th minute with no way back for Switzerland.
Argentina now faces the winner of Belgium and the United States in the next round.
