Following their upset against Bayern Munich in the Champions League last season, Arsenal suffered a tough 2-0 defeat at home to the German side. Despite a strong start to the game from the London club, Ozil was unable to score from the penalty spot early on, after being brought down by Boateng during the eighth minute and having his shot saved comfortably by Neur. As expected, Bayern refused to deal with the constant pressure, and their efforts paid off by earning a penalty of their own, after Szczeny took down Robben in the centre of the area, earning himself a red card and putting Arsenal down to 10 men. Surprisingly enough, they failed to score from the spot kick as a weak shot from Alaba only managed to strike the post and go wide.
Munich’s first goal of the game eventually came from Kroos during the 54th minute, after an incredible shot from the edge of the area curled into the top corner, leaving Fabianski with no chance to reach the ball. The strength then kept piling on Arsenal for the rest of the game, and a last minute header from Muller secured a second goal with three minutes to go, thanks to a neat cross from the ever-present Robben.
Only time will tell if Arsenal’s European run will affect their Premier League form, as they travel to the Allianz Arena on March 11th for the second leg.
