Would Rondo fit the #KnicksTape?
While the New York Knicks failed to land any free agents, Phil Jackson struck gold in the draft with the acquisition of rising baller, Kristaps Porzingis. Initially, Carmelo Anthony was rumored to have had issues with the draft pick last off-season; but after seeing him action, things soon quickly changed after his success with the Knicks. Reports recently surfaced that Melo Would be personally recruiting free agents this summer, in comparison to previous years with team owner James Dolan.
Whether or not Phil Jackson returns to the team next year is the biggest mystery not named Kevin Durant this summer, but Melo is focused on adding pieces to the squad he feels can be elite. In a recent interview with media, the captain seemed more upbeat – in comparison to being discouraged about the under-performing season New York is currently enduring. Carmelo went to begin early free agency recruiting of Rajon Rondo saying, “I think he’d be perfect in a system like this.”
“A system like this fits a guy like that. To have the ball in their hands and be able to run the offense, I think it fits well. I don’t know who’s telling him he doesn’t fit. It is a misconception about that. Some of our keys of offense is penetration, getting in the paint, pushing the pace, transition creating in the paint for bigs. A point guard would love that. It’s a perfect opportunity.”
After turning down a five-year, $70 million extension with the Celtics two years ago, Rondo will once again hit the open market, as we’re sure he’ll have some suitors in need of a starting point guard around the league that will be willing to invest in the 30-year-old veteran.
