Chile Eliminates Spain From World Cup After Shocking 2-0 Win

When Spain lost to Netherlands 5-1 last Friday, the entire world was shocked and dismayed. It’s not like Holland doesn’t have a great club and wasn’t seeking revenge, but nobody predicted the score to end in such lopsided fashion.

Then the defending champions stepped on to the field to bounce back from that embarrassing loss and it happened again at the hands of Chile.

Early into the first half at the 20th minute, Eduardo Vargas had the first goal of the game after a sweet cross from Charles Aránguiz, which caught Spanish goalkeeper Iker Casillas off-guard and gave Vargas a somewhat open shot at the net.

Spain played out of sync for most of the second half, and managed to attack with a few attempted shots from Diego Costa and Xabi Alonso. Then, the inevitable happened right before Halftime. Chile scored again.

After Casillas saved a free kick from Alexis Sánchez at the top right corner, Aránguiz found himself in front of the rebound and shot it in the same exact spot Casillas had previously blocked, catching him dancing and with a goal at the back of the net.

By the time the second half started, Spain had no soul out on the field and looked like they had accepted defeat, even though they were attacking Chile like their lives depended on it. The closest chance they had came at the hands of Sergio Busquets, when he missed a wide open goal from point blank range.

There’s only two words left for Spain after today’s match:

The upcoming Australia vs. Spain matchup on Monday is pointless after the Aussies were eliminated earlier, but that Chile vs. Netherlands game is going to be LIT.
