During the NBA year there are a number of rumors that come and go about possible trades. Though we are barely into this season, there’s a lot of major names being thrown around in possible trades rumors. The latest that really caught our eye, is a potential Boston/Houston deal that would see Rajon Rondo swapped for Omer Asik.
Though this seems a bit far fetched, if you really analyze both teams, the deal makes sense. The Celtics have been discussing a Rondo trade for awhile now as part of their full team rebuild and with Rondo recovering from his knee injury, it was rumored that the Celtics wanted to move him before he got back onto the court. From the Rockets side, it’s really not about them wanting to move Asik, but rather Asik wanting out of Houston (at all costs) and asking for a trade multiple times.
Will this trade happen? Only time will tell, but it’s possible, given the history of Celtic’s GM Danny Ainge’s fondness for doing business deals with his ex-Boston buddies (more in particular Rockets head coach Kevin McHale);. The trade doesn’t seem too far fetched and might go down before February’s trade-dead line. As the season progresses, we will see a lot more of these rumors become reality.
What will this mean to that Kevin Durant to Houston Jalen Rose prediction?
Smith brings up a legitimate point: Will the Celtics be realistic contenders by 2015, when Rondo’s contract expires? Probably not. If so, what exactly will keep Rondo in town when plenty of other teams will be begging for his services? If the trend of superstars wanting to play together continues, a facilitator with championship experience like Rondo will be in high demand.
