Will Deontay Wilder & Tyson Fury fight this year?
Saturday night, Brooklyn’s Barclays Center was the host to boxing’s first big fight of 2016. We saw Deontay Wilder defend his WBC heavyweight title against Artur Szpilka, which went to the 9th round. However, the fighters started off rough, trying to feel each other out, as the undefeated Wilder would leave his imprint on the fight down the later stages of the bout.
While both heavyweights had a horrible percentage in shots landed, Deontay would rise in the ninth round to land a vicious right hook and lay Szpilka flat on his back. The punch was so hard, that Artur remained unconscious for nearly two minutes, before medical staff confirmed he was still breathing.
Szpilka would have to be carried out on a stretcher, but gave the New York crowd a thumbs up that he was okay. This immediately prompted fellow heavyweight Tyson Fury to rush the ring and cut his best WWE-like promo against Wilder, and set up a possible mega-fight between the two unbeaten boxers. Unfortunately, Tyson has to waste time fighting Wladimir Klitschko later this year and defend his Ring, WBO, IBO and WBA Heavyweight titles at later date.
Whether or not Wilder takes on a warm-up fight remains to be seen, but both fighters appear to be on board in the UK for 2016 – or early 2017. Peep the confrontation below with Wilder and Fury.
