The prized defensive player will stay in New England
Just when it looked like Devin McCourty was on his way out of New England, the very sought after cornerback/safety is making his return to the Patriots after reaching an agreement on a 5-year, $47.5 million dollar deal with $28.5 million in guaranteed money.
McCourty was being targeted by teams like the New York Giants, Jacksonville Jaguars and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who had a need for a safety and was coveted for playing two positions rather than just one.
His $9.5 million a year salary makes him the second highest paid safety in the NFL. McCourty confirmed the news on Sunday night:
“I’m blessed to say we had other teams that were interested, but I said all along that I knew in my heart that I wanted to be back in New England. But I also knew the business side of football, and I had to do what I had to do. I’m back, but I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t possibilities over the last two days that I was going to be somewhere else. I’m happy it all worked out.”
With Devin locked up, New England now turns their focus to holding on to Darrell Revis in hopes to make another run to a Super Bowl next season.
