In the latest episode ESPN’s “E:60” series, Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford is profiled to discuss early life growing up to being a star QB in the NFL. ESPN’s Rachel Nichols went to visit Stafford in his hometown of Dallas to see how his football life began. Stafford’s parents touched on their son always being athletic and having knowledge for the game of football at even 5 years old.
Matthew’s talents were so good, he started Varsity as a sophomore at only 15 years old with even NFL Hall-of-Famer Troy Aikman and actor Owen Wilson both taking time out of their busy schedule to see him play. His high school team went undefeated as a senior which landed him a scholarship at Georgia where he became the starting QB as a “true” freshman and would declare for the NFL Draft after only one season.
Stafford would then go on to become the no. 1 pick of the 2009 draft for the Detroit Lions and signed a 6-Year/72M contract deal. In his first two season, he would get injured both years but last season he a had a breakout year throwing for more than 5,000 yards landing the Lions their first playoff bid in 12 years. This season his team’s been having a rough start going 2-4 as it’s going to be extremely difficult for the Lions to regain ground in a tough NFC North division which features the Bears, Packers & Vikings.
