In the latest episode ESPN’s “E:60” series, New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz profiled in a semi-biography documentary. Here, ESPN reporter Rachel Nichols profiles the star receiver as he grew up in rough Paterson, New Jersey in a single parent home. When Victor was 10, his father approached him about playing peewee football which he agreed to would soon find out he had special talent.
Cruz failed to receive Division 1-A scholarship being called too short and slow which gave him a chip on chip on his shoulder. In 2005, he got a Division 1-AA scholarship to UMass which he didn’t take serious skipping classes and eventually got his scholarship rescinded because of poor grade and not showing up to class. Victor found himself back in Jersey working in a men’s clothing store in a local mall which he would encounter a near death experience at a local nightclub that would change his life.
Victor would then return back to UMass with focused on his education and sports. After not being selected in the 2010 NFL Draft, Cruz was called by the Giants for a workout and the rest was history. After suffering a torn hamstring 4 weeks later, he would have to miss the rest of the season. In 2011, Cruz started 4th on the depth chart and would soon become the no. 1 receiver for the team with his breakout Super Bowl Championship year.
