Does Eli Manning deserve this accolade?
Six years ago, Eli Manning agreed to a $97.5 million contract, prior to the start of the 2009 season. With free agency approaching, reports have surfaced that the New York Giants starting quarterback is now looking to become not only the highest-paid quarterback among peers – but the entire NFL. Doing so, this would enable Manning to surpass the $22 million Aaron Rodgers makes if he gets a contract due before the end of the season.
While New York can still franchise-tag him next year, Eli will still surpass Rodgers as the highest paid QB at potentially at $23 million. Although Manning isn’t obviously the best quarterback in the league, he’s coming off arguably his best season with the injury-plagued G-Men and is still in the prime years of his career.
With two Super Bowl Championships under his belt in the last 8 years, the Giants organization will look to get this deal done sooner, rather than later. The Giants are looking to ensure their durable QB (longest active streak with starting games played at the position) remains home in across the Hudson, and we’re expecting the imminent contract to surpass the $65 million guarantee Philip Rivers received over the weekend .
