It’s a well established fact that ESPN shoots almost 100% with their “30 For 30” programs, and lately these online shorts have been spectacular. With baseball season right around the corner, it was only right they brought us something to make our interest pick up. In their latest 30 for 30 short How The Sox Lost A-Rod, the director dives into the failed deal by the Boston Red Sox to acquire Alex Rodriguez. If you remember the Sox had a deal in place for A-Rod after the 2003 season, but the MLBPA did not approve the deal and for the meantime Rodriguez remained with the Texas Rangers. Enter Brian Cashman and the New York Yankees.

Just like the Yankees had just done in the 2003 ALCS, they left the Red Sox devastated. Now looking back on the deal about a decade later, the ironies from it are almost overwhelming. First, shame on the Texas Rangers choosing Joaquin Arias over Robinson Cano for the center of the A-Rod deal; especially when the Yanks were willing to deal Cano.

The other blaring irony is the Red Sox went onto win the World Series in 2004 after the Yankees acquired A-Rod. To make it even sweeter for Sox fans, they came back from down 3-0 against the Yankees in the series and Rodriguez had one of the biggest blunders in game 7.

Watch the interesting story after the jump.
