The biggest game in group D was expected to be Switzerland against France, and after seeing the end result, that was exactly the case. Despite a sudden change of heart from Switzerland, France went on to win 5-2 in a sensational game between the top two teams in the group.
It took around 15 minutes to get the scoring underway, as Giroud headed a delightful ball into the back of the net from a swinging corner. Seconds later, Matuidi made it 2-0 by interchanging passes and ultimately beating the keeper at his near post.
This was just the beginning.
The third goal of the game arrived just before half time with a fast counter-attack from France, and Giroud placed an inch-perfect ball across the box in order for Valbuena to tap in.
Despite having a disallowed goal earlier in the game, Benzema managed to get his name on the scoresheet with the fourth goal, whose smart diagonal run gave him the chance to slot through the keeper’s legs.
When the game couldn’t get much worse for Switzerland, Sissoko then built on a massive stretch of space on the right by placing the ball into the bottom left corner.
However, this turned out to be somewhat of a turning point in the game. Dzemaili added a consolation goal for Switzerland with 10 minutes to go, by hitting a free-kick straight through the wall and into the near corner.
With minutes to go, Xhaki grabbed another goal for Switzerland, after making a neat run past the France defence and volleying past Lloris.
However, the full-time whistle blew at an incredible 5-2 victory for France, despite Switzerland’s late burst.
