In one of the most anticipated group games of the World Cup, Germany dominated to earn a worthy 4-0 win against Portugal and put themselves in great position in the “group of death,” aka Group G. Not only did they demolish Portugal, something nobody expected, but they’re now solidified as one of the top teams of the Cup.
Germany opened the scoring around 10 minutes into the game, after Gotze was brought down by Peraira in the penalty box, and Muller was able to beat the keeper from the spot. Hummels added to the lead around 20 minutes later, who climbed above the Portugal defence to get on the end of a brilliant cross from Kroos.
And it was a nosedive for Portugal from thereafter.
The game got worse when having Pepe sent off for violent conduct, after swinging his arm at Muller and screaming at the Bayern player while on the ground. Moments before half-time, Muller managed to grab his second goal of the game to make it 3-0, firing home after capitalizing on a weak clearance.
The last goal of the game was Muller’s hat-trick close to the 80th minute, as a save from Patricio was pushed into the path of the striker, who had no option but to score.
Next up for the Germans, they will take on Ghana on Saturday, while Portugal will try to bounce back against the United States on Sunday.
