COACH POP!
After announcing his departure from Team USA Basketball earlier this week, the successor to Mike Krzyzewski has been announced. San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich will take over after the 2016 Olympics, with his first task being training camp in 2017, to get ready for the 2019 Basketball World Cup and 2020 Olympics (if qualified).
To no surprise, Coach Pop is one of the best in the NBA, leading the Spurs to multiple championships during his tenure. He is taking over a position Krzyzewski has held since 2005, where he led Team USA to consecutive Olympic gold medals and a 75-1 record.
“What the program has accomplished over the last decade under the leadership of Jerry Colangelo and Mike Krzyzewski is truly impressive. I will do my utmost to maintain the high standards of success, class and character established by Jerry, Coach K and the many players who have sacrificed their time on behalf of USA Basketball.”
It’s safe to say the future of Team USA is in good hands.
