Brees Sets NFL Record For Consecutive Games With A TD Pass.
For the NBC Football America “Game of the Week,” we were shown inter-league play which featured the AFC “powerhouse” San Diego Chargers as they traveled to play the winless NFC South New Orleans Saints. Heading into this game, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell granted suspended Coaches Sean Payton, Joe Vitt as well as general manager president Mickey Loomis privileges to attend the game in which all are currently serving suspensions connected into the bounty investigation.
In the first quarter, Philip Rivers would connect with Robert Meachem for a 15-yard pass which highlighted a 91-yard drive as Rivers really got his deep passing spurt going early on. On the next ensuing possession, Drew Breees would answer back with a quick 80-yard drive of his own highlighted by a 40-yard TD pass to Devery Henderson to even the game at 7 all. With that TD pass, Brees passed Johnny Unitas for the most consecutive regular season games with a touchdown pass which he now has at 48 straight.
In the 2nd quarter, Nick Novak would chip in a 20-yard FG to regain the lead for the Chargers, but this was immediately followed by a another TD drive from Drew Brees which he linked up this time Marques Colston for a 19-yard pass and second touchdown of the game. With two minutes left before halftime, Philip Rivers would hit Robert Meachem for a 44-yard TD pass that highlighted a one minute elapsed drive.
Jumping to the 2nd half, Drew Brees would become the victim of an interception by Quentin Jammer which would later set up a touchdown run Ryan Mathews to give the Chargers a 10 point lead but that would be there last score of the game. Before the quarters end, Drew Brees and the Saints were ready to take this game as they started things off with a 16-yard TD pass to Marques Colston highlighting a 85-yard drive to bring the game to one possession.
In the 4th quarter after a quick three-and-out by the Chargers, again, Drew Brees would link up one last time with Marques Colston for their third TD connection of the game to regain the lead at 28-24. On the next Chargers possession, Phillip Rivers would get intercepted by Roman Harper as he intended a deep pass to Malcom Floyd. This would set up one last Garrett Hartley FG but this time from 26 to make it a full 7 point lead for New Orleans.
For the final possession of the game, the Chargers would become victims of the “real referees” after a couple of missed pass interference calls went without being noticed then a last second fumble from Rivers to end the game at the Saints 33.
The Saints now get to enjoy a bye week next week as to get preparations for hopefully a comeback season starting with a game at Tampa Bay two weeks from now. San Diego isn’t that lucky as they have to play the Broncos in a AFC showdown for Monday Night Football.
