UNCLE DREW!
It has been six months since Kyrie Irving last stepped out into the hardwood for the Cleveland Cavaliers, returning to the team after breaking his left kneecap in Game 1 of the NBA Finals last June. We almost thought he’d be back as early as last week, but it seems like the Cavs waited to play a lower level Eastern Conference team to get the rust out of Kyrie.
And rusty he was. Irving missed his first five shots, but kept fighting throughout the 17 minutes he was out on the court, finishing with 12 points and 4 assists on the night.
Although he didn’t play a perfect game, Kyrie showed flashes of his old self: from the handles, to the 3-point stroke and even steals in transition, finishing strong to the hoop.
The Cavs are going to ease him into the lineup before giving him big minutes with the starting five. Cleveland managed to start the season 17-7 without Kyrie, but the squad is almost at full-strength after battling injuries since last season’s playoffs.
Cleveland currently sits on top of the Eastern Conference standings at 18-7, two and a half games ahead of the Indiana Pacers, who are 16-10.
