ALCS Bound!!
The other ALDS win or go home Game 5 of the night was the Kansas City Royals and Houston Astros. After the first Texas team went home at the hands of the Toronto Blue Jays, the second team from The Lone Star State was hoping to not suffer that same fate on the road.
It was the Astros that opened up the scoring in this matchup, when Luis Valbuena homered to right field in the second inning. It was 2-run shot.
Two innings later, in the fourth, Eric Hosmer put Kansas City on the board with a single that brought Lorenzo Cain home and made it a one run game after a fielding error in centerfield. Then in the fifth inning Alex Rios hit a double barely making it down the line, which put the Royals on top, bringing Salvador Perez and Alex Gordon home. But it wasn’t over yet. Ben Zobrist extended the lead with a sacrifice fly, bringing Rios in and putting Kansas City up 4-2.
By the 8th inning, it was all Royals thanks to Johnny Cueto, who retired the last 19 batters he faced and struck out eight on the night. It was a performance for the ages and exactly what the team needed when he came in the trade with the Cincinnati Reds.
With the two run lead in the 8th, facing Dallas Keuchel on the mound, Kendrys Morales sealed the deal with a 3-run home run to center. It was the icing on the cake for Kansas City.
The Royals will now face the Blue Jays in the ALCS.
