#3Peat status, though?
For whatever reason, our gut feeling was that Kevin Durant would somehow end up playing with LeBron James this year. While that’s not out of the possibility, Durant wants to stay with Golden State for at least one more season. The reigning back-to-back NBA Finals MVP has agreed to a one-plus-one max deal with the Warriors, which would earn him $30.5 million.
This means he can opt-out of his contract next season and pursue a new opportunity around the league. Even if Golden State pulls off a 3-peat next summer, we don’t expect Durant to stay put for a long-term deal after the team moves to the new Chase Center in San Francisco.
However, if anything goes left in the playoffs against their friends in Los Angeles, Durant could opt out of his contract next summer and become an unrestricted free agent in 2019. At this point, we’re not sure if he would even want to go the highest bidder, considering most superstars with external revenue (not named Carmelo Anthony) are playing for rings.
We still feel Durant is going to somehow opt-out of his deal with Golden State and join LeBron James in southern California next summer. The Lakers are limited in cap-room space this summer for only two-max deals and can land a possible third player next season when the salary cap increases.
Let us know in the comments what you think of this one-year max deal.
