With 4.7 seconds remaining in regulation and the length of the court ahead of them, Villanova had one shot to seal victory. And they did in the most dramatic way possible.
After the in-bounds pass, Ryan Arcidiacono raced up the court and it looked like he would be the one to attempt the game winner, but he dished it to a wide open Kris Jenkins, who sank the long-range three-pointer. The entire arena went absolutely bezerk. It was one of the most ridiculous shots to ever be taken in an NCAA Tournament.
Not to mention, this all happened right after North Carolina gave Villanova a scare, when Marcus Paige sank a very difficult double clutch three-pointer of his own to tie the game at 74 with 4.3 seconds remaining and possibly send the game to overtime.
But in the end, fate and history was on Villanova’s side.
This victory gave the Wildcats their first national championship since 1985, ending a 31 year drought and bringing the title back to Philadelphia.
Paige led all Tar Heel players with 21 points, while Jenkins ended the game with 14 points and going down in the history books with that insane shot.
