Before kick-off today, many expected a close encounter between the top four sides, but a thrilling performance from Liverpool produced a 5-1 victory against the leaders of the Premier League. A first minute goal from Skrtel gave the reds a perfect start at Anfield, as the defender was able to get on the end of a free-kick from Gerrard. Just under ten minutes later, Gerrard was able to find Skrtel from a corner, who forced a header into the top left of the goal. Matters went from bad to worse for the London club, as Sterling was able to grab another by slotting home a close shot, thanks to a neat low cross from Suarez. By only the 20th minute, Sturridge put Liverpool into an incredible 4-0 lead, as a threaded ball from Coutinho gave the striker a chance to slot home past the keeper.
By the end of the first half, Arsenal were unable to have a single shot on target, and their frustration was evident through Wilshere’s reactions. The 52nd minute saw Sterling grab his second by hitting a rebounded shot into the the back of the net. Arsenal were only able to pick up a consolation goal later on, after Gerrard brought down Oxlade-Chamberlain in the penalty area, and gave Arteta the chance to slot home from the spot, while Liverpool pushed on to an admirable 5-1 win.
The result leaves just five points between the two clubs, with a tough fixture list for Arsenal set to test their strength over the coming months.
