In one of the first heavyweight games of the new Premier League season, Man City pushed on to defeat last season runners-up Liverpool in a 3-1 victory at the Etihad. Despite looking more impressive, the reds went 1-0 down just before half time with a brilliant goal from Jovetic, who made a darting run into the area to power home past Mignolet. Moreno was half asleep, but this was the striker’s only shot on goal during the first 45 minutes.

Man City then built on their lead around 10 minutes into the second half, with Jovetic grabbing his second by rushing onto a pass from Nasri, in order to blast home past Johnson and a flying Mignolet.

Within a matter of seconds of Aguero replacing Dzeko, the Argentinian managed to make it 3-0 by making an unstoppable run and slotting into the near post.

Liverpool only managed to secure a consolation goal before the final whistle, with Lambert receiving a ball from Sturridge to put over the line. The goal was later given to Zabaleta as an own goal.

So much for Balotelli proving a point to his former club from the sidelines.
