For the better part of the year, Oregon Ducks standout junior quarterback Marcus Mariota had been the favorite among all athletes to run away with the once in a lifetime achievement. With nearly 3,800 yards thrown and only two interceptions the entire year, Mariota garnered the second most sizable margin in history at 90.9 percent (2,534 points) – second only to Ohio State’s Troy Smith in 2006 (91.6 percent). Wisconsin tailback Melvin Gordon would finish runner-up at 1,250 points, while Alabama wide receiver Amari Cooper came at third with 1,023.
During the emotional acceptance speech, Marcus thanked his home state of Hawaii, coaches, teammates; but most all family and friends, who were all on hand teary-eyed as well. Whether he decides to make the a jump to the NFL remains to be seen; but he’ll have time now to enjoy this accomplishment, before their big Rose Bowl showdown New Year’s Day against Jameis Winston and the Florida State Seminoles in the first ever College Football Playoff.
