In the second day in a row, the theme of the World Cup Group A matches was about the referees making bad calls. Yesterday, we saw Brazil get some calls go their way and get the help of a bogus penalty call, while today, Mexico was robbed of two goals that were “offsides.” Both came in the first half at the hands of Giovani Dos Santos, who put two in the back of the net and was quickly waved off thereafter.

Not only were the Mexican players upset, but even the commentators from all sides (except Cameroon) were calling out the refs at the half. It seemed like Mexico couldn’t catch a break in the rainy conditions, going into locker room disappointed.

But that’s why they have to periods.

In the second half, the Mexican national team would not be stopped, and the only goal of the game came from Oribe Peralta in the 61st minute to put them up 1-0 and that’s how it ended. Javier “Chicharrito” Hernández had his chance late in the game, but he could not convert on a wide open cross from Miguel Layún.

The closest chance Cameroon had to tie came in the 90th minute, when Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting took a direct shot and was blocked by Guillermo Ochoa.

Cameroon had more shots on goal and corner kicks, but Mexico dominated time of possession completely, holding on to the ball 62% to Cameroon’s 38%. This loss gives the Cameroon national squad their 5th World Cup loss in a row, the longest streak ever by an African team. This also gives Mexico 3 points in the tough Group A, which is more help than they expected.

Mexico’s next match is Brazil this Tuesday, while Cameroon will take on Croatia the next day on Wednesday, in Group A action.
