It was pretty much all or nothing in this Mexico vs. Croatia match today, with the winner in contention to take second place in Group A next to Brazil.
Both teams came out firing the first half, but the defense held the two teams scoreless into halftime. The refs seemed to be favoring Croatia, because Mexico couldn’t get a call near the goal to save their life. There were a number of calls that didn’t go their way, and even by the end of the game, the refs missed a handball or two throughout.
But either way, Mexico would not be stopped.
After a few attempts from corner kicks, Rafael Márquez opened up the scoring for the Mexican squad in the 72nd minute, with a sick header from a cross by Héctor Herrera. It seemed like the entire team rejuvenated and found the momentum.
Especially because the goals wouldn’t stop.
Just three minutes later, Andrés Guardado found the back of the net on the assist by Oribe Peralta. The entire stadium exploded with that score.
Then seven minutes after that, the nail in the coffin to the Crotatian hearts came at the hands of Chicharrito, who scored from point blank range after a crazy header pass from Márquez off another corner kick.
The score gave the Mexican national team a total of three goals in 10 minutes and almost victory over Brazil in Group A, until Brazil scored another goal against Cameroon in their match happening at the same time.
Even though Croatia dominated in time of possession, Mexico attacked with more shots on goal and more corner kicks, two of which ended up in the back of the net for scores. Even without the refs giving Mexico some key calls, Croatia still managed to draw more fouls, including a frustration red card against Ante Rebic coming after Chicharrito scored the third goal.
Thi win put Mexico in the round of 16, as they will take on the very scary Holland squad in their next match on Sunday. Croatia is officially eliminated.
