Today Goldin Auctions in New Jersey announced that they have acquired two recruiting letters from North Carolina University addressed to Michael Jordan. Yes, “The Airness” himself. The letters are from assistant coach Bill Guthridge and legendary head coach Dean Smith. Both letters detail personal meetings between the staff and MJ and proclaimed their want for him to attend UNC.
How did these letters come up for auction? Oh, you know, just by a random guy finding them in a storage locker. WHAT? Yes, things like that actually happen and it could lead to big money for the seller because both letters have started bidding at $5000 and $2500. How did the letters wind up in the storage unit? Word has it that Jordan personally gave them to a restaurant in North Carolina, but when the restaurant went out of business in 2003, the letters got placed in the unit.
Just how popular is Jordan memorabilia at auctions these days? Well, just last month, the shoes that Jordan wore during his infamous “Flu Game” were sold for $104k. If you have any Jordan stuff lying around, now might be the time to get that checked out.
