It is officially “Black Monday” in the NFL, which is the day all coaches on the hot-seat in the league dread more than anything. For the Redskins, today is the start of a new direction as they have fired head coach Mike Shanahan after 4 seasons in Washington. This move is not surprising at all if you have payed attention to the recent turmoil within the organization.
Shanahan and owner Dan Snyder seemed like they were not on the same page about all lot of things and most notably were on different wave lengths about starting QB RGIII. Under Shanahan, the Redskins only finished out of last place in the division one time and that was behind RGIII’s miraculous rookie season.
More on the story after the jump.
Washington must now find the right coach who can come in and fully use all of the talent that is on the roster and turn this thing around. Wile the Redskins were terrible this year, they still don’t have a first round pick, following a trade with St. Louis Rams in their drafting of RGIII.
The other major concern of course is the condition of RGIII moving forward and if he can ever get back to where he was during his rookie season. Whoever they bring in will have to work with RGIII and help him change the way he plays to avoid injuries down the road. We will update with more details on the coaching search as they progress.
