MLB To Ban On Plate Collisions In 2014

New York Yankees v Philadelphia Phillies, Game 3
Before Bud Selig Retires Next Year, He’ll Be Retiring On Plate Collisions This Winter.

Following two major home plate collisions in the AL League Championship series between the Boston Redsox and Detroit Tigers, Major League Baseball is looking to add another implement to their game even more. With instant replay set for the 2014 season, they will soon be upsetting fans in the process once more with a newly pending ban of plate collisions. In 2011, San Francisco Giants first-baseman Buster Posey shattered his ankle after trying to stop a routine pop up save at home, due to a collision.

Posey became very vocal about the ban following his injury and surgery; which promoted Cardinals manager and former catcher Mike Matheny to also speak out on the pending ban. Much like the NFL-concussion controversy, the MLB is looking to resolve any issues surrounding potential contact plate collisions; with hopes of avoiding any more major lawsuits. Officials released a statement this weekend saying,

“At this point, I don’t know who would argue to keep it, or what their argument would be,” said one team official who believes general managers will address the topic at their meetings next month. “There is no reasoned argument to keep it [in the game].”

Stay tuned for more information on the pending ban of plate collisions.
