Adam Silver is looking to make big changes to the league this summer
One of biggest gripes over the last 15 years from fans, has been the lack of quality teams within the Eastern Conference. From below .500 teams making the playoffs and 40-win teams out West missing the playoffs, the landscape the playoffs has been one of the more embarrassing things the league has endured.
During a Golden State Warriors game earlier this week, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver took part in a Facebook Q&A session with fans. While many were asking if the Bay Area would get an all-star game once the new San Francisco arena was up and running, he was questioned if the playoff format would be altered heading forward.
Silver soon revealed, he has a proposal already in place for division winners to automatically make the post-season in April, but detailed how the next 10 teams with best records regardless of conference would have a seed. In recent months, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has been very vocal about changing up the division alignment, but now we doubt that will be needed at all next year.
Ultimately we want to see your best teams in the playoffs. And there is an unbalance and a certain unfairness. There is a proposal where the division winners would all automatically go into the playoffs and then you’d seed the next 10 best teams. I think that’s the kind of proposal we need to look at. (…) I do think it’s an area where we need to make a change.
