Earlier this week, NBA TV premiered “The Doctor” featuring Julius “Dr. J” Erving. The nearly 90-minute documentary follows Erving’s childhood life growing up in Roosevelt, L.I. with narrator Chuck D of Public Enemy to becoming one of the most iconic sports figures of all-time. He brought us some of the biggest jaw-dropping highlights influencing your favorites in the NBA from Michael Jordan to Vince Carter, and LeBron James.
Those who witnessed his greatness up close and personal include Pat Riley, Bob Costas, and Doug Collins to name a few all speaking on their experiences watching him in the league. While there was always excitement on the court, Julius dealt with overwhelming off the court passings with his father when he was only 9 years old, to his brother dying at 19; and more recently his own son losing his life after a tragic car incident, also at 19.
“If you ever hear Michael Jordan talk, he always says he looked up to and aspired to be like Dr. J. So if there was no Dr. J, then Mike would have never had someone to look up to, and if there was no Mike, then there’s no guys like myself who looked up to Mike.”
