In what many thought would be a simple task for the Netherlands, the Dutch national side nearly faced an upset during their fighting 3-2 win over Australia. The two sides looked bright in attack from the very beginning, and it took until the 20th minute for Holland to put his name on the scoresheet, thanks to Robben pushing through the defence and striking across goal into the far corner.
However, just one minute later, Australia responded with well-deserved goal on the break, after a long ball was carefully put into the penalty area and Cahill hit a terrific volley that struck the bottom of the crossbar past the keeper.
A contender for goal of the tournament so far.
Australia took the lead around 10 minutes into the second half, as Janmaat gave away a penalty for a handball incident, allowing Jedinak to score from the spot.
Minutes later, Van Persie made the score level by firing into the net with just the keeper to beat.
Despite Australia’s attempts, Holland grabbed the winner from Depay to make it 3-2, who fired home from a long distance and made it difficult for Ryan to keep out.
Australia face Spain on Monday, while Netherlands take on Chile later that day.
