Mexico were all set to go through to the quarter final for the majority of the second half, until the Netherlands made a quick comeback in the dying minutes to win 2-1. Despite the two sides battling it out during the first half, no goals were scored within the first 45 minutes.
Less than three minutes into the second half, Giovani put Mexico in front with a spectacular goal from the edge of the box. The player used a combination of his chest and body strength to get into space, in order to fire home past the keeper.
The game was in Mexico’s hands.
Ochoa was playing yet another huge role for Mexico, who saved them from going behind on a number of occasions.
That was until Sneijder managed to equal the score just moments before the 90th minute mark, who directed a powerful shot from just inside the area.
The worst possible scenario occurred for Mexico in added time, as Marquez brought down Robben in the penalty area while on the move. Huntelaar stepped up to score a late winner from the spot to give the Netherlands a 2-1 win.
It was a shame to see Mexico crash out of the tournament like that. We’ll be missing sights like these in the remaining games.
