New Orleans Pelicans Officially Hire Alvin Gentry as New Head Coach

Is this the right move for Anthony Davis?

The NBA Finals may be starting in just 4 days, but the off-season has already begun for most teams trying to find suitable coaching replacements and upcoming potential new stars in the draft next month. Two weeks ago, the New Orleans Pelicans made the non-shocking firing of Monty Williams – following five seasons. While the team finally reached the playoffs for the first time ever the Anthony Davis era, the front office felt it was time to move on and find a more experienced coach to help mold the 2nd most versatile player in the league.

The Pelicans have looked to Golden State Warriors assistant Alvin Gentry and made the announcement of his hiring Saturday afternoon. Gentry, who’s currently engaged in helping Steve Kerr on the sidelines for thir finals run against the Cleveland Cavaliers, will finish his current duties in the Bay Area before moving on.

His last head coaching tenure was with the Phoenix Suns in 2013, where the team missed consecutive trips to the playoffs. Following his firing, Gentry has been an assistant head coach for Doc Rivers of Los Angeles and the previously mentioned obvious under Kerr. Jeff Van Gundy was also rumored to have been a leading candidate for the job, as he will continue to serve as a broadcaster for ESPN and ABC’s NBA coverage.
