NYJ is cleaning house

Head coach Rex Ryan and New York Jets general manager John Idzik were the first to be announced to be fired on Black Monday. Owner Woody Johnson made the decision after the Jets failed to make the playoffs for the fourth year in a row.

“Both Rex and John made significant contributions to the team, and they have my appreciation and gratitude for their efforts and commitment. Over the years, Rex brought the Jets a bold confidence and a couple of great postseason runs, which all of us will remember. We will consider all options to improve the Jets. Getting the Jets back on track is my top priority, and today’s decisions are important steps towards achieving our goals.”

Ryan had already called his firing before the season even finished, after telling friends to expect it. He ends his tenure with New York with a 46-50 record in six seasons and most playoff wins (4). With a struggle at quarterback the past few seasons, he failed to make any impact in the NFC and general manager Idzik didn’t help in free agency or during last year’s draft.

Their poor 1-8 start this season pretty much sealed their fate.

The Jets will now look to more offensive pastures, as the organization will look to go in a different direction than the course they have been the past few seasons. Their past few coaches have been defensive minded, so they’ll be hoping to replace that with someone more offensive.
