Darrelle Revis Traded To Tampa Bay, New Deal Is 6-Years/$96M
The New York Jets have finally made the necessary steps to trade away their star cornerback Darrelle Revis, which could be the beginning of the end of the Rex Ryan story in New York, now that his favorite player is leaving. The Jets and Tampa Bay Bucaneers agreed to a trade, pending a league physical, and have granted Revis the permission to visit Tampa Bay for multiple tests —expected to be given today.
In 2010, Revis and the Jets both dealt with a very public holdout, ending just 9 days before their season opener. Revis, who didn’t agree to his rookie contract on time, signed a 4-year/$46M deal ($36M guaranteed), which included a clause in the contract that prevents the Jets from putting the franchise tag on him at the conclusion of next season.
The Jets were not confident in resigning the 27-year-old corner-back to a long-term extension, due to the circus that has surrounded the franchise the past two seasons; hence why they’re looking for compensation in return for trading away their star.
Coming off major ACL surgery after a Week 2 injury, Revis’ consecutive Pro Bowl streak ended after 4 years. The Buccaneers, who still remain intrigued to trade for Revis, are expected to give him the long-term contract extension he’s looking for, by trading away their 13th pick in this year’s NFL draft.
The NFL draft begins Thursday at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
