THE STUB HUB SIXERS
The Philadelphia 76ers have been last in the league for so long, they needed to be number one in something besides losing. Today, they did it. They announced that Stub Hub would be their sponsor and have become the first team in the NBA to secure a patch on their jerseys.
As it was revealed last month, NBA teams will allow a sponsor to appear on their uniforms starting on the 2017-2018 season, as the league moves to acquire more money for organizations and players. The move was a controversial one for fans of the sport, who are not used to seeing that on their team jerseys. On the grand scheme of things, it’s something plenty of the global giants do, with soccer doing it regularly (as seen on kits by Barcelona, Manchester United and Real Madrid).
Stub Hub and the Sixers partnership also becomes the first jersey patch sponsorship in major sports leagues in American history, so it’s a defining moment for the future of sports in this country.
Although the Philadelphia organization has been asking everyone to “trust the process” the past few years, as the team has continued to tank, many changes have been made over the course of the past few months in hopes for a turn in direction for the franchise.
