Raiders & Chargers Pursue Joint Stadium in Los Angeles

NFL in L.A. back??

Sam Kroenke may be trying to start his own Los Angeles project in Inglewood, California with or without league approval, but it seems like he faces strong competition now, with the Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers announcing a joint venture to break ground on a privately funded stadium in Carson, CA. The $1.7-billion NFL stadium proposal sits in 168 acres off the 405 freeway and Del Amo Boulevard.

The rivals-now-turned-partners have joined forces as an alternative to deals that may fall through in their respective cities of Oakland and San Diego by the end of the year. Both are on one-year leases with their venues and the residents are hesitant to commit public money for new stadiums in their cities.

“We are pursuing this stadium option in Carson for one straightforward reason: If we cannot find a permanent solution in our home markets, we have no alternative but to preserve other options to guarantee the future economic viability of our franchises.”

Currently, only the New York Giants and New York Jets share the same stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. but this new proposal can bring the Raiders back to Los Angeles and the Chargers, who have a good portion of fans in the L.A. area, closer to them.

While the organizations still have to go through the process of relocation and majority votes from the owners, most speculate there will be a team in L.A. by 2016.
