Robert Griffin III Has Been Shut Down For The Rest Of The Season, Kirk Cousins Will Start

Robert Griffin III’s struggling season has gone from bad to worse, with reports surfacing today that he will be benched for the rest of the year. Mike Shanahan made the decision to shut him down for the time being, and replace him for Kirk Cousins.

The reason? To keep RGIII healthy and prevent him from taking a hit that can potentially send him to injury reserve during the off-season. If you’ve been keeping tabs on the Washington Redskins, Griffin has been sacked a total of 24 times during the span of the past three games and it doesn’t seem to be getting any better.

Robert Griffin III talked to reporters earlier today and said as much as he wants to finish the season off with his teammates, he respects coach Shanahan’s decision and will support Cousins as much as he can from the sideline.

As far as Shanahan’s future with the Redskins? He has one year and $7 million left on his contract, and as of today, owner Daniel Snyder said he supported his decision to bench RGIII amidst the turmoil surrounding the team. The two will talk at the end of the disappointing season and see where they go from here.
