The Denver Nuggets didn’t want it to happen against them, but it did. It only took 55 years, but Russell Westbrook finally beat Oscar Robertson‘s 41 triple-doubles in 1961-62, notching his 42nd of the season and setting an NBA single season record.
The way it ended was incredible too.
Westbrook hit the game winning three from way downtown (40ft away) with 2.9 seconds left to beat the Nuggets on the road in the most dramatic fashion.
Russ finished the night with a ridiculous stat line that included a 50-point effort, 16-rebound, 10-assist night. This cements his place in history as one of the greatest single achievements ever.
Even though he was playing in front of a different crowd, he received a standing ovation from the Denver fans, as they cheered for him leading up to the historic triple double and continued to do so all the way until he broke the record.
It has been a crazy year for Russ, who is now averaging a triple double for the season, leading his league in every major statistical category. He also made history by grabbing his third 50-point triple double, which is more than any player in NBA history.
Robertson has vouched for Westbrook’s as MVP and if this doesn’t seal it, nothing will.
