Russell Westbrook Out Until After All-Star Break Due To Knee Surgery

wst

The NBA has been plagued with the injury bug again this year, as we have learned that Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook will be out until after the All-Star break following knee surgery this morning. The report says that the arthroscopic surgery was used to remove swelling in Westbrook’s knee that stemmed from his injury during the 2013 playoffs.

At the present time, it’s unclear what this does for the Thunder’s chances this season; but we do know that they are a different team when Russy isn’t out there. The good news for them is that they have enough depth on the roster to hold on until they get Westbrook back. However, with emerging teams in the Western conference like the Blazers, it might be hard for OKC to make a legitimate title run. More on the breaking news after the jump.

Thunder general manager Sam Presti released a statement today saying,

“Russell has been playing pain free, but recently had experienced increased swelling After consultation and consideration by his surgeon in Los Angeles, a plan was established to monitor the swelling that included a series of scheduled MRIs. On the most recent MRI it was determined by the surgeon that there was an area of concern that had not previously existed, nor was detectable in the previous procedures, and it was necessary to evaluate Russell further. The consulting physician determined that arthroscopic surgery was necessary to address the swelling that was taking place. We know that Russell’s work ethic and commit.”
