The 49ers stay in-house
After numerous interviews with plenty of candidates, the 49ers didn’t have to look too far to find the next coach to succeed Jim Harbaugh in San Francisco. Defensive line coach Jim Tomsula has now officially been promoted to head coach and has some experience on the team, serving as interim head coach after Mike Singletary was fired in 2010.
Tomsula has been with the team since 2007 and built a good relationship with players in the locker room on the defensive side, helping one of the only bright spots on the 49ers last season. The defense ranked 5th in the NFL last season and the hiring of Tomsula brings some familiarity to a team that doesn’t need to stray too far from where they have been, which is the conference championship multiple times the past five years.
There are some questions as to who he’s going to hire as offensive coordinator since Greg Roman left for the Buffalo Bills, but San Francisco are keeping their defensive staff in tact.
This effectively ends all talks with other considered coaches, a list that included Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase, Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and Mike Shanahan.
