San Francisco 49ers Officially Trade Alex Smith To The Kansas City Chiefs

49ers Choose Colin Kaepernick As The Franchise As Matt Cassel Loses Job With Chiefs.

The San Francisco 49ers have finally made it clear that Colin Kaepernick is their franchise player after taking them to the Super Bowl in his first year as starter by trading away former starter Alex Smith.

Smith now heads to the Kansas City Chiefs as they’ll part ways with their former QB Matt Cassel who has two-years left remaining on his 6-Year/$63M contract.

The Chiefs recently signed former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid to take over the reins for the team as Alex Smith will now have a chance to thrive in Reid’s west coast offense. With Kansas City however, Alex won’t have the same offensive-line or multiple deep targets seen in San Francisco which he and Reid will have to be on the same page to make their offense work.

The 49ers acquired two picks from the Chiefs in this trade; no. 34 for the 2013 draft as well as another conditional mid-round pick for 2014.

Heading into the draft, the 49ers now have 11 picks heading into the 2013 draft as they’ll have multiple options whether to trade away picks for ready talent in preparations for another run at next Super Bowl or build for the future around the 25-year old Kaepernick.

Now that their QB situation is solved, all signs are pointing to the Chiefs drafting Texas A&M offensive-tackle Luke Joeckel as the no. 1 overall pick of this year’s draft.
