San Francisco 49ers Rally to Overcome Early St. Louis Rams Scare

49ers

49ers continue hot streak to win 3rd straight before Mile-High meeting!

The St. Louis Rams injury bug has really hurt them for the current season. Following Sam Bradford’s unfortunate re-tearing of his ACL; the team was forced to play another season without their franchise QB. Second year player, Austin Davis had provided some great production with back-to-back 300-yard passing games against the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys, in consecutive single-digit losses.

Now facing a much-win situation to save their season, the Edward Jones Dome was packed for a week 6 closer on Monday Night Football to be the 12th man for the night. Both teams had moderate rushing production (and maybe under-performing) with Frank Gore seeing a 38 yard outing on 16 attempts – which was sadly nearly half of the total yard San Francisco got on the ground. The Rams would open the game scoring on their first possession, to cap off an 80-yard drive, with a short rush from running-back Benjamin Cunningham.

Alec Ogletree really thew a ball at Carlos Hyde’s helmet, though.

San Francisco would see a very quick 3-and-out, but tight-end Vance McDonald would fumble on a 21-yard pass to put the Rams in very good field position. Austin Davis would connect in the series with Lance Kendricks for a 22-yard TD to give them a 14-0 lead. Now with their backs against the wall, San Francisco’s defense would finally wake up for the duration of the game only allowing, one extra field goal to their opponents in quarters 2-4.

Later in the second quarter, the 49ers would finally put their first points on the board with a 54-yard field goal from veteran Phil Dawson; but the story of the game was Colin Kaepernick’s 80-yard pass to Brandon Lloyd, to give them their first TD of the game with just 14 seconds left before halftime.

We’re sure Jonathan Martin was happy it was Ethan Westbrooks who threw a punch at him instead of Richie Incognito!

Things would continue directly from halftime, as Kaep and Frank Gore led their team down the field to cap off an 80-yard drive with Anquan Boldin catching his first TD of the game – giving them a 17-14 lead.

With their defense finally motivated, yet dealing with injuries throughout the night, the 49ers would cap the game off with defensive-back Dontae Johnson intercepting Davis deep in their own territory for an easy pick-6. Following their 31-17 victory, San Francisco now heads to Mile-High for an epic prime-time showdown and game of the week against Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos.
