Canelo vs. Lopez airs on Showtime at 9pm ET/ 6pm PT
Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will be defending his WBC Light Middleweight (154lb) Championship belt against the rugged journeyman Josesito Lopez at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, NV. Canelo hailing from Guadalajara, Jalisco Mexico holds an undefeated record of 40 Wins and 29 of those by Knockout. His last victory was against an aging Sugar Shane Mosley on May 5th of this year. Lopez, a native of Riverside, CA holds a record of 30 wins 18 of those by knockout and 4 defeats. His last fight was a “Rocky moment” win against Victor Ortiz on June 23 of this year. In the “fight of the year” candidate Victor Ortiz suffered a broken jaw after a huge Lopez left hook; after the 9th round Ortiz was not able to continue.
Before this match up between Canelo and Lopez; Victor Ortiz was scheduled to be Canelo’s next challenger. Due to the fashion in which Lopez defeated Ortiz Golden boy promotions felt that Josesito Lopez had earned his right to fight against Canelo. It should be noted there has been much controversy, as Lopez is a natural Jr. Welterweight (140lb) and had just moved up to Welterweight for the Ortiz fight.
