Coach K has until summer to narrow down team of 30!
Team USA Sports has revealed the candidates for their upcoming Rio de Janeiro quest next summer in Brazil. As usual, LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony highlight the collective of 30 finalist revealed today; but Stephen Curry is also among the elite collection of players, that will look to help lead the country to their third straight gold medal – marking his first ever Olympics appearance.
He previously won gold medals in the 2010 World Basketball Championship and the 2014 Basketball World Cup, but missed the 2012 games due to injuries. The final 12-player roster will be finalized this summer, when Mike Krzyzewski has more time to scout the depth chart and pick who he wants.
USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo issued a statement earlier saying, “the depth of talent that exists in the national team program is extraordinary. Repeating as gold medalists at the 2016 Olympics will not be easy, but we feel confident that we have 30 finalists who offer amazing basketball abilities and special versatility.” If you’re wondering the status of Kobe Bryant for the summer games, he unfortunately took himself out of the running for a third stint this week.
