We could see this day was coming at some point, but now that it’s here, it’s still hard to accept for a lot of people. Tim Duncan has finally retired after 19 seasons with the San Antonio Spurs.
Only days after his announcement, he spoke on what drove to the decision and mentioned the key was “it wasn’t fun as much. When it’s not fun anymore, I’m done.”
So what’s next for possibly the best power forward to ever play the game?
“For the first time in 20-something years, I don’t have a script. I don’t have somewhere I have to be and something I have to do. So, I get to go out and enjoy my kids even more. Outside of that, I get to do a little living.”
“It’s been fun. The next chapter will be fun, too. I really enjoyed the ride. I really enjoyed the cheers and the laughs and the highlights and the lowlights, everything that comes with that package. … No better way to put it than, `Thank you.”
And as far as the accolades and where he ranks in the top NBA players of all time? The man couldn’t be any more humble than he already is:
“I don’t really care where the rankings go. I’m in the conversation. I’m OK with that. That’s above and beyond anything I ever thought I’d ever be. That in itself is an honor.”
Sensational. Thank you Timmy.
