Is This Jay Cutler’s Year?
“Jay Cutler will be the MVP in 2015.” These words have been etched in minds since they were spoken by Cutler’s long time friend and favorite target Brandon Marshall. The reigning MVP Peyton Manning had the top receiving tandem in the league (Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker), but the Chicago duo Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery fell only two yards short of their total. So, while many took those comments as extremely biased, numbers don’t lie.
What needs to happen in order for Cutler to have a MVP caliber season? Very simple actually. The offensive line needs a repeat performance of last year, ranking fourth in sacks allowed which gave Cutler the time to let his cannon lose. He has to stay healthy, this has been the biggest issue throughout his career and easily the most important key to his success. Lastly, he has to limit the turnovers (ending the season with 15 in 11 games) but that didn’t prevent him from ending with a career best 89.2 passer rating.
The Bears think highly of Jay Cutler and have shown their support both on and off the field, not to mention re-signing the quarterback to a three year, $54 million dollar extension. Is he worth the money? No doubt. Does he have the supporting cast to win the NFC North and possibly a MVP? Go take a look at the depth chart and guarantee you will return nodding your head.
So, ultimately the question remains, is this Jay Cutler’s year? TBD.
