Will J.J. Watt & JaDeveon Clowney Make The Texans Defense ELITE?
This is one of the most exciting story lines heading into the NFL season and for good reason. Despite all of the question marks regarding Clowney’s effort, motor, and physical shape, eventually, it will be time to put on the pads and let the rookie let his play do the talking. That moment has arrived and he gets to line up with Pro Bowl mainstay / former NFL Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt.
So, let’s take a freak college athlete that dominated and give him one of the best defensive lineman in the league to help him adjust to the NFL game and what do you get? A lot more than extra jerseys being sold and packed home games. These two will be almost impossible for offensive lines to contain. During preseason, the two only had brief moments together on the field (for obvious reasons), but the glimpses of greatness were there. Watt, played in every spot on the defensive line to confuse coordinators and even resulted in a sack early against the Cardinals. This may not sound like anything to boast about, but they were given only 10 plays together and one resulted with the quarterback on his back.
The Texans who ended last season with a depressing 2-14 record will no doubt get back to what made them seem like a contender only a few years ago. They recently acquired Ryan Mallet in hopes of solving their quarterback issues, someone has to be able to get the ball to Andre Johnson and young star Deandre Hopkins. Things like building a championship take time but with JJ Watt and JaDaveon Clowney being added to the defensive line should help overshadow secondary problems.
Dear Andrew Luck, be afraid. Be very afraid
