Tristan Thompson stays in the land on new 5-year deal
After witnessing Kevin Love receive an maximum contract extension, as well as re-ups for Timofey Mozgov, Iman Shumpert and Kyrie Irving; Tristan Thompson has finally received his new contract his off-season. Originally, the rebounding machine was looking for a 5-year/$94 million dollar extension, but he and the Cavaliers were off $14 million during negotiations.
However, having the same agent as LeBron James has benefited the 24-year-old beast, as the team has granted him a new 5-year deal worth over $82 million. When both Kyrie and Kevin missed the NBA Finals last June, Tristan was instrumental in providing key contributions in an over-matched battle against the world champion Golden State Warriors. With the salary cap increasing next summer and beyond, Thompson can position himself for more money down the line, as long as he stays healthy and continues the production we’ve seen from last season.
What puzzles us with this deal, is that the Cavaliers now have a front-court salary with the trio of Thompson, Love and Timofey Mozgov of over $200 million dollars – not to mention Anderson Varejão collecting his yearly-check with the team. The deal spilled throughout pre-season play, as Tristan is yet to participate in any team activity this fall. They open their season in six days on the road against Derrick Rose, Jimmy Butler and the Chicago Bulls.
